Freedom From Chronic Pelvic Pain

I yearned for freedom from pain. I’d been struggling with chronic pelvic pain for over 20 years when I found Abigail in 2008. A woman I met at a pelvic pain treatment clinic emailed. She asked if that was me who commented on Abigail’s blog, The Vagina Dialogues. Abigail, who had healed herself from IC and vulvodynia, intrigued me. How did she do it? And what was life coaching?

In 1980, when I first had symptoms of chronic pelvic pain, it was the dark days of pelvic pain treatment. I just transferred to a university away from home for the first time. Vaginal soreness and chronic yeast infections started with a sexual relationship with a new man before I broke up with my long-time boyfriend. A few years later abdominal pain and irritable bladder symptoms joined in. Other symptoms included painful periods, anxiety, constipation, intestinal gas, food sensitivities, and pregnancy complications.

How to Go from People Pleaser to Self Lover

Several years ago, I gave a gift to someone in honor of a milestone we had reached in a fundraiser. That’s a nice thing to do, right? But I didn’t feel my usual joy of giving. Instead, I felt resentment.

This was a person who made me feel unwelcome and unappreciated. Yet here I was giving her a gift!

To add insult to injury, I kicked myself quite a bit about it afterwards.  Why would I give her a gift?  Was I out of my bleeping mind?

Simple. I wanted to be accepted, appreciated, and liked.

In my heart, I knew that giving her a gift wasn’t going to change that situation.

But it ended up doing something much better. It hurt so badly that I had to sit down with the pain and dig deep. In the process, I figured out a how to deal with a prominent pattern in my life.

That new understanding was a surprise gift – to myself!

I knew something was off.

I didn’t feel good. I could sense my mood plummet; my energetic vibrations go lower and lower. I was impatient with people, not able to focus on my work, my creativity was not cooperating with me and I found myself standing in front of the open refrigerator at odd times, or with an empty bag of coconut chips in my hands.

I stopped and asked myself what the matter was but couldn’t figure it out.  It wasn’t sadness, anger, or fear, although I’m sure if I peeled the layers of the discomfort, I’d find fear somewhere in there. But I was too busy to deal with this. I had work to do!  I had only two days left to hand in the remaining two of seven articles I was supposed to write for review by my writing mastermind group.

So I put up with it. Ironically, the more I let the dark cloud stay around, the more darkness it brought in. But I was too busy, right?

Ditch Your Diet and Heal Interstitial Cystitis

If you want to heal interstitial cystitis using a mind-body approach, then this blog post is for you! If you’ve read any of my previous blog posts, or joined the Kindness Community for some help around healing, then you might already know the basic steps in the mind-body healing process. I’ll review them here for you:

  1. Ask yourself what you are feeling emotionally throughout the day any time you feel afraid or upset by symptoms. Allow yourself a few minutes to feel any emotions related to the symptoms themselves, then focus on other stressors in your life. What ELSE is stressing you out, besides the symptoms? What was going on today before you started worrying about symptoms? The non-pain-related stressors are the real issues that need to be dealt with, faced, and felt. It’s the mind’s tendency to suppress emotion and avoid feeling around the “real stuff” that causes a mind-body syndrome to perpetuate.

The Homeopath and the Healer

It was the late 1980s, I was 28 years old, and I already had an eight year history with chronic pelvic pain.  My symptoms included persistent pain in my lower right abdomen, chronic vaginal soreness, and urinary urgency.  I was seeing an MD who was a specialist in Candidiasis.  She had been treating me for over a year with the drugs Nystatin, Tylenol and Codeine, and a diet.  I wasn’t getting any better.  I had been treated for endometriosis several years prior and I thought the pain was coming from my right ovary.  The pain got worse when I was on my period or ovulating.

One day I asked my doctor if I could have my right ovary removed in order to stop the pain.  

Her response was to refer me to a homeopathic physician and to a healer.   The homeopath gave me some weird treatments like drinking vinegar.  The healer waved his hands over me and told me my pain had to do...

3 Surprising Signs that You’re Healing

One of the hardest parts of a mind-body healing journey usually looks like this:

  1. Discover amazing resources like The Mindbody Prescription by John Sarno, M.D or When the Body Says No by Gabor Mate, M.D.
  2. Feel hope for the first time in forever.
  3. Dig in and try to apply mind-body healing to your situation.
  4. Feel some skepticism, but do it anyway.
  5. Start feeling emotions rise up into your awareness.
  6. Feel a little nervous about this emotion stuff, and worry that the pain hasn’t gone away yet.
  7. Start worrying that you’re doing it wrong, because now you feel emotions AND pain.
  8. Have a wee freak-out.

When you start down the path of allowing and feeling emotions in order to let your body release tension and pain, you might feel very optimistic. You can see how this could work. Get Out of Food Prison

I took at least a million different supplements

When I was struggling with interstitial cystitis in my early twenties, I tried everything under the sun to get better. I took at least a million different supplements, tried anything and everything I read on the internet, and went to multiple doctors for many different treatments. I was so afraid I would have interstitial cystitis symptoms forever that I was willing to do anything to heal.

I went on several different magical detox diets that were supposed to cure IC, but to no avail. Finally, I attempted a candida cleanse, as I was convinced I had systemic candida. The reason that sticks out in my memory is not the terribly restrictive and limited diet (I was used to that by then), but the incredibly disgusting digestive experiences I endured while on the “cleanse.” I am putting “cleanse” in quotation marks, because I am now highly suspicious and skeptical whenever I see that word. The Trick to Healing TMS: How to Get Out of Overwhelm and into Relief

I’m so overwhelmed with the ideas about TMS, Mind Body Syndrome, and healing that I don’t know where to start.

I’m afraid that this approach won’t work for me, and I’ll be the only one, ever, who fails at this.

I can’t find my emotions – I feel blank.

I’m afraid to feel my emotions, but I know I need to/have to in order to heal.

I’m researching all the TMS/Mind Body Syndrome/Sarno resources and now I don’t know what to do.

I feel like a big mess.

I can’t figure out what to do next on this healing path, and I feel like I’m not healing at all.

I have to do all these things in order to heal, but it’s completely overwhelming!

The PMS Advantage

Trying to be good all the time? 

In my early twenties, I was new to the self-help genre and had spent most of my formative years trying to be an excellent violinist. When I picked up John Sarno’s The Mindbody Prescription, the personality profile he described fairly smacked me in the face. Perfectionism? Trying to be good all the time? Feeling responsible for everything? I just thought that was how one should live life!

He made me see, however, that the extreme pain I was experiencing from vulvodynia was talking to me. It was time to take stock and change how I was treating myself.

Thus began my self-awareness journey, in which I started to peel back layer after layer of beliefs, patterns, and perceptions, always working to know my true self more and more. The more I did this, the better I felt, in body, mind, and spirit.

Every year of this ongoing journey, I feel more aligned with myself, more confident, stronger, and just – happier.
