You Really Don't Have to Do That Task Right Now (and Here's Why)

I follow a lot of business coaches, and when I see suggestions like “take massive action this week,” I always feel my stomach clench. It’s never a good idea to pressure ourselves to take massive action if our bodies and spirits aren’t feeling it.

When I say this, people usually respond with this: “But, you can’t always feel good before you get things done - nothing would ever get done.”

That’s a belief we need to question if we’re going to actually enjoy our lives as coaches while running a thriving business.

It doesn’t have to feel like a constant scramble to run a thriving business. It can feel spacious, open, relaxed, and light.

My mission in life is to constantly spread this message so that you never have to feel that stomach-clenching stress feeling and wonder if you’re deluding yourself that working in your calling could actually feel relaxed and way better than the old 9-5 life.

Are there things we have to do to run a business that we don’t love? Sure. (For me, bookkeeping and taxes are high on that list.)

Do you know what doesn’t work? Pressuring yourself to do those things when it’s not aligned.

For example, I had a to-do on my list for my business that sat there for about six months. It was a bookkeeping to-do involving calling a company and straightening out a problem.

Every few days I would tell myself I should really do this task. I should get it done. It needs to get done, and I’m not doing it.

Then I would have to remind myself that if it’s not the right time, it’s not the right time. My inner guidance will tell me when it is. If it feels like a ton of bricks are weighing me down when I think of the task, it’s not the right time.

I’ve learned to trust this over the past fourteen years of running a business in a non-hustle, mind-body-spirit-aligned way! I call it Right Timing.

A couple of weeks ago, the company sorted out the issue without me calling. They sent me a notice and voila, I was able to check off that to-do without doing a thing.

Just think of the time I could have wasted doing that task!

Usually, when a task feels onerous or full of pressure, one of three things happens.

  1. It eventually solves itself, just like in the example above.
  2. I realize that it’s not the right action step for me or my business.
  3. Eventually, the right moment arrives for me to do the task and it feels easy to do it.

Very often, marketing and typical business promotion tasks will fall under #2. You’ll notice that you’re pressuring yourself to do something you think you should do to make your business work, but it’s actually not right for you.

The tasks that you know you need to get done will often fall under #1 or #3, and the great news is, they will get done one way or another.

Checking in with your inner wisdom before tackling a task will help you know what to do, when to do it, and whether or not you really need to do it. I recommend leaving it on your to-do list but bumping it out a bit for a re-check if it doesn’t feel like today is the right day.

I promise, if you’re gentle with yourself and you aren’t pressuring yourself, a weird peace will come over you and you’ll tackle those things you don’t love with much less stress, tension, and overwhelm. You really will feel like doing them; sometimes it’s actually the most virtuous, lovely feeling as you tackle that task with no angst.

I know this because I hate folding laundry. And yet, I fold the laundry without angst because I never pressure myself to do it. Ever.

This kind of alignment with your inner being feels super magical. You’ll notice far more synchronicities showing up, ease and flow happening, and income flowing into your business.

The key is to get really honest with yourself. Sometimes inner wisdom is telling you to go ahead and do something but your dopamine pathways would prefer some Netflix right now.

This is normal!

Listen deeply to that inner wisdom, follow it, and then reward yourself with the Netlfix!

All in all, this way of functioning in your business leads to taking massive action only when you truly feel like it, and even better, you will only take the kinds of massive action that are truly aligned with helping your business thrive. (Often, the massive action business coaches suggest is not even going to help your business, but that’s for another missive.)

You’ll end up taking more massive naps instead of massive action and delighting in the way clients and income flow to you with far less effort. This feels magical!

Helping you differentiate between types of action you think you should take and what your inner wisdom is really telling you for your business success is my jam! I can help you with this in my Heart Centered Accelerator program. You’ll get super clear on which practical steps really do help your business thrive and which ones you can ditch.

One way you’ll save yourself years of effort and wasted time is we’ll articulate who you serve, how you help them, the problem you solve, and the solution you provide. This takes ALL of the guesswork out of your marketing and is the one missing piece you need in order to see the clients flowing in and your business growing as desired. You’ll be able to present your message to your potential clients and get results with far less effort, energy, and time. They will quickly know whether or not they need your services.

We’ll also design or revamp your signature program so that your business is set to scale without overburdening your schedule. I’ll teach you my Slacker Magic System (which you saw a piece of above) for manifesting clients and income without the typical hustle tactics.
