When You Haven't Coached Enough People to Niche Down

Do you ever worry that you can’t figure out your niche because you haven’t coached a lot of people yet? Well, the great news is that you can totally have a starter niche that gets your business rolling and sets you up to evolve over time.

It’s true - it can be hard to know what your calling is when you haven’t yet worked with very many people. This can feel like a what comes first, the chicken or the egg type of situation. Should you just start coaching in any old niche? Should you just offer some random coaching? How to you get moving if people don’t know what you do?

This can also apply if you’re hoping to pivot your niche as well.

Not to worry, though, this is where a starter niche will do the trick and solve this problem!

A starter niche is a niche that feels fun and exciting to you (admittedly, it might even feel a bit nerve-wracking, but that’s ok!) and has the clear potential to set you on a path for your business that will allow you to tighten the messaging and make the niche clearer and more aligned as you learn more about yourself and your work.

When we’re writing super awesome messaging that attracts clients into our business, we need to know several things:

What problem we’re really good at solving
Why our solution to the problem is unique
Who needs our solution that we offer, and why
What makes us different from other people solving this problem
Fears and limiting beliefs people have about why they can’t have the solution they want

We also do need to know that we can solve this problem for people and we have a process for doing so.

Of course, this is tricky to come by when you’re newer to a niche.

Here’s how you can find out what your starter niche is so that you can get moving in a direction that will actually lead to you making income sooner rather than later. Without a starter niche, you’re likely to be posting rather general content that applies to life coaching in general, which is less likely to attract clients and bring you income quickly.

The quickest way to know where to start when it comes to your niche is to look at your passions, your life experience, and the intersection of these two threads in your life.

What have you overcome?

If you think about this and find yourself feeling resistant to working with others in this area, it’s ok. It doesn’t actually mean this is the wrong niche. It just means you need to clarify and see if any particular focus around this problem is actually fun to contemplate.

For example, I have a client who knows how to help clients with their financial traumas incurred during a relationship with a spouse who was financially controlling. When we talked about her working with women who were struggling with this, it felt heavy and difficult to her to work with them if they were still married or going through a divorce process.

However, helping these clients after they were divorced and ready to take control of their own finances felt amazing to her.

It’s all about where you position yourself within the niche; where you actually solve the problem. What stage is your potential client in? Are they new to the problem? Are they in the thick of it? Are they nearer the end of the problem and want to create something really positive as they leave this issue behind?

There are so many different ways that you can serve a client around one singular problem, which is why articulating what you do is so important. You don’t want to attract those clients who aren’t in the place that you can best serve them.

When I started out coaching, I positioned myself as supporting women with chronic pelvic pain. Then I attracted those clients. This was my starter niche!

I quickly discovered that I hadn’t articulated my message clearly enough. I actually wanted to work with women who were excited to use mind-body healing to help relieve their pelvic pain. I knew that going in - I just didn’t articulate it in my messaging.

So, I got a lot of clients who wanted support around pelvic pain, but no clients who wanted a mind-body approach. I had to go back to the drawing board and re-write everything to make it clear that I was a mind-body coach for pelvic pain.

Once I shifted my messaging, I got all sorts of perfect clients who I could truly serve. That starter niche grew my business to a six-figure business.

If you have an idea of what you’ve overcome and what you’re passionate about and you have an idea where you’d like to help people in the stages of the problem they’re facing, you’ve got your starter niche.

It’s a great starting place, and then you can absolutely evolve your niche messaging and add specificity as you get more experience.

We all have to start somewhere, so once you get rolling in your starter niche, you’ll be able to capitalize on that momentum and create more and more energy for your business. At first, you may need to do a few free 1-1 sessions and then a low-ticket program to make sure that what you do really works. Once you know that and have a few testimonials, you’re completely set to grow your business in this niche.

As you gain experience, you might discover exciting and fun details about your niche that allow you to write better and better messaging. You might find out new things about yourself and your clients that helps you articulate who you help even more. Your niche might evolve a bit as you grow with it. This is how it works!

The key is to start in an area of passion for you - not just some random niche or a vague, general niche that doesn’t clearly show people that you solve a problem for them.

And, if you don’t want to do this process alone, I can easily help you spot your starter niche and show you how to articulate it, whether you’ve coached clients before or not. If you’re pivoting from a different line of work, starting up, or pivoting within your coaching business, I can quickly help you get the clarity you need to write solid content with clear messaging that attracts clients.

I have an intuitive gift I call the Celtic Seer and this seer part of me can easily pluck your niche out of thin air just from talking to you! It’s super easy for me to see your money-making path and your calling.
